In an attempt to give the home mechanic some guidance on how difficult a task is, a numerical rating scale of 1 through 4 has been adopted.

1 is easy, 4 is difficult.

The ratings adopt the following guidelines:

• 1 - Easy. No significant chance of time pressure delays, only the most common of tools required, little risk of breaking anything.

• 2 - Moderate. Give yourself a little extra time on this one, just in case. Work arounds are used so no special tools are needed.

• 3 - Challenging. May need some special, if not expensive tools. If things go wrong you may suffer a day or two of delay as you get out of a fix or have to procure extra parts. Attention to detail is required if you are to avoid damage to your vehicle.

• 4 - Difficult. Re-read the pictorial several times in determining whether to do this task. The car you are working on should not be your daily driver as you may not have things together again in short order. May require some special tools unique to the Mercedes Benz. May require exceptional patience and dexterity. Possibly significant risk of damage if you reassemble things incorrectly. Do you really want to do this at home?
